HEC-SIG Cohort #5: Meet our Facilitators

Rebekah Layton, PhD, CMC, PCC, is the Director of Professional Development Programs at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Rebekah provides individual career coaching and leadership mentoring for trainees and is a Certified Mentor Coach (CMC) and Professional Certified Coach (PCC). She is a published author on professional development and career outcomes, a contributor to Inside HigherEd Carpe Careers, and a member of the Graduate Career Consortium where she currently serves as the Southeast Regional Director. Rebekah designs, implements, and evaluates a comprehensive professional and career development program housed in the Office of Graduate Education supporting biomedical graduate students and postdoctoral trainees. Her expertise in personality and social psychology includes the study of self-regulation and goal-setting. Rebekah firmly believes that exciting career options await each trainee, and she helps individuals to identify and capitalize on their strengths to prepare for the next steps that are right for them to launch them toward career success. Maryam Mohaghegh, M.Sc, CPC, is the Founder of Coaches in Academia, an online community of coaches in Higher Education. Maryam is a Lecturer of Persian Language and Culture at North Carolina State University where she serves as the ICF Academic Liaison, a member of the Board for Student Success and Program Coordinator for Asian Language Concentration. Maryam developed expertise as a scientist in molecular biology and virology, before turning her energies toward languages and teaching. Most recently, she has blended her passion for helping students learn and grow through teaching in the academy, with her passion for serving the whole person through coaching. She is a trained graduate of the Business Coach Institute in Raleigh and now brings her coaching skills to support students and faculty. Maryam believes coaching as a required element of higher education as they attempt to define and design their future path and work to bring it forward. LinkedIn

Kelli Hendrickson, ScD, PCC, is a Research Associate Professor at UNC-Chapel Hill. With her Professional Certified Coach (PCC) credential from the International Coaching Federation, Kelli specializes in empowering higher education STEM professionals through coaching to foster resilience, cultivate a growth mindset, and align career aspirations with personal values. She is a leader of the ICF Raleigh Area Chapter Board and serves in the Higher Education Coaches Special Interest Group where she co-authored a white paper on coaching in higher education. Her leadership in the coaching field and her role in integrating coaching into higher education underscore her dedication to advancing professional development within the academic community. Shirley Rijkse, MBA, SHRM-SCP, DTM is the Human Resources Lead Instructor for the Business Technologies Department at Central Carolina Community College.  Advising for academic studies in Business and HR, using a coaching style. She is also the advisor for HR Student Chapter and Toastmasters. Shirley serves as Southeast Regional MAC (membership advisory Council) for Society of Human Resource Management. Shirley is trained with Choose to Win Coaching from Ziglar. She holds many certifications to enhance her proficiencies. Her many years of leadership and training were developed through experiences in human resources, business management & ownership, senior retirement/assisted living administration, vocational rehabilitation, medical/dental office management, and cosmetology.  Shirley brings an enthusiastic passion for education and helping others create their own success stories through personal empowerment coaching.
